3 Simple Ways to Improve Your Golf Game

Article by Chris

I have worked many years on a golf course and time and time again I see golfers making the same mistakes. In this article I will share with you three easy steps to help reduce your score and increase your enjoyment out on the course. This information comes from literally thousands of hours spent out on the course observing and talking to golfers of all abilities.

The first step before happens before you even go out on the course. It involves preparation and determination. It is simply GET IN SHAPE, think about, how many out of shape golfers or athletes do you see on TV? I know there are some exceptions, but for the most part athletes are in shape. Let’s examine what the benefits are of being in shape, the first is that you will be able to walk all 18 holes, second your back won’t be as sore from carrying all that extra weight, which will enhance your golf swing. Third your shoulders and arms won’t get as tired easily and lastly you’ll be able to swing your hips right around to get maximum power.

The second step occurs on the day and that involves preparation. Before you get out on the course make sure you drink plenty of fluids (not beer) to keep you hydrated. There is nothing worse then having your muscles cramp up and you don’t have enough water to drink and you can’t find the beer cart girl. Also make sure that you stretch before you get out there, don’t just do a couple of practice strokes, make sure you get a good warm up and the muscles are nice and loose. Otherwise your first hole will be awful.

Lastly, keep your head down, enjoy yourself and golf with people who you enjoy being around. There is nothing worse then playing with someone who looses their temper and creates and awkward situation for the rest of the round. It can be highly embarrassing to be around this person as all other golfers will be looking at you and so will the course staff, trust me I have seen it before. The last thing you want to do is make a bad impression so no one wants to golf with you anymore. You might as well have stayed home and saved your money.

I hope these tips help you out. I have found them to be highly useful and have helped me take strokes off my score, I know they will help you as well. Please check out my site for all things golf related.

Skycaddie Can Seriously Improve Your Golf Game

Skycaddie Can Seriously Improve Your Golf Game

Article by Jaz

You have the clubs that you have always wanted and you are practicing a great deal at the range, and on the course, giving yourself every opportunity to improve. Your handicap, for some reason, insists on staying put. Do you know what you should do? You should give some serious thought to investing in a SkyCaddie GPS rangefinder, from SkyGolf.

Whilst there are other companies out there who are trying to infiltrate the golf market, making attempts to modify GPS devices that were originally conceived for a completely different purpose, SkyGolf is the only company that was originated for the purpose of creating golf-specific technology products, and specialize only in the development and innovation of positioning systems for the use of individuals whilst out on the golf course.

The SkyCaddie is officially the number one rangefinder in golf, and if you have purchased one then you will be able to take comfort in the fact that you have invested in the same technology that is used by a huge percentage of the caddies that work for leading professionals on the world’s various PGA and LPGA tours.

Professional golfers do not have to rely on their intuition in order to hit a ball the right distance, and so why should you. We are not all in the advantageous position of being great enough at golf to have our own caddies, which is kind of ironic in a way, given that we are the ones that need them the most. Fear not though, because the SkyCaddie is here to do all of the things that a caddie does for you (except carry your bag), and at a fraction of the price.

Golf is all about playing the percentages, and with the SkyCaddie you are doing just that. If you are on a course you are unfamiliar with, looking towards the hole, you cannot possibly judge accurately just how far in front of the green that bunker is, or how far behind it that water hazard is – until now. Now you know how far it is – exactly – and you can choose your club accordingly. This is all down to the marvellous thinking that SkyCaddie does on your behalf – thinking that we mere mortals are sadly incapable of doing!

Okay, another scenario, and again you are playing a shot into the green. It is above you, the green, and so where you are positioned is shielded from the wind. Wouldn’t it be great to know the exact elevation to the pin, and also to know if the wind is gusting up there – imagine you didn’t just know that it was windy up there, but you knew exactly HOW windy it was. All of a sudden, and thanks to SkyCaddy, you know not to take that seven-iron, but to go for the five-iron instead – If you were to have chosen the seven then you would have been well in the drink, and bang goes your chance of scoring in the seventies for the first time: or, with SkyCaddie on your side the sixties even!

3 Golf Tips to Lower Golf Handicap And Improve Your Golf Game

3 Golf Tips to Lower Golf Handicap And Improve Your Golf Game

Article by Tim Lee

If you are looking for means to lower your golf scores, then here are some valuable tips that are sure to help golfers of all ages and abilities to lower their golf handicaps.

(1) Practice…Slowly

Good form during a swing is very important in improving one’s performance. However, too many people make the mistake of simply going for many repetitions instead of honing their form per swing.

If you do not force every practice swing to form perfection, simply doing repetitive exercise can actually be detrimental since you could be repeating a wrong form over and over again. This could burn the wrong form into your muscle memory and could seriously hinder your bid for better performance – and a lower handicap.

Practicing a golf swing in slow motion can be a great way to fine tune your swing and get the right form while you are at it. Your mind will connect better to the proper muscle movement and form.

You can start speeding up a little a time while you do this. Eventually, you can get yourself doing the right form over and over again. This is when repetitive exercise can help.

(2) Get a Grip

Good golf grip is important for any serious golfer. And the best way to develop your grip is by practicing it every time you can. Most golfers have golf clubs by their sofa – for easy access whenever they lounge by the television – so that they can practice their grip as often as possible.

With enough practice, holding a club properly will become second nature to you. So keep those clubs within constant range for a better golf grip.

(3) Get a Mirror

A mirror is a great way to monitor and evaluate how your swing is going. You could use a video recorder as well to get better angles of your swing – and they are great for keeping you focused on swinging instead of looking at the mirror. Choose whatever option is convenient for you.

Mirrors and videos can help you get immediate feedback on whether what you are doing is correct. You may also want to send this video to instructors who can then tell you what you are doing right and what you are doing wrong.

Conclusion

As with most things, only practice makes perfect. However, you can avoid wasting your time during practice by learning to practice smarter instead of just more. The tips mentioned above will help you get started on this road.

Improve Your Golf Game-What Every Golfer Should Have in Their Golf Bag

Improve Your Golf Game-What Every Golfer Should Have in Their Golf Bag

Article by Rick Greene

Besides the obvious clubs, balls and tees there are several things that everyone should carry to improve their golf experience:

1. Sunscreen- You should always keep sunscreen in an easily accessible pocket of your bag and USE IT. At least 30 spf.2. Extra score cards- If you are a member or just play a course regularly, grab a couple extra score cards and pencils (erasers optional). There are times when you forget to grab a card at the clubhouse and there may or may not be one already in your cart, if you are using a cart.3. First aid kit- This doesn’t have to be fancy or bulky. Just grab a few flexible cloth bandages, a roll of white medical tape, a gauze pad or two, some antiseptic wipes, ibuprofen or aspirin and anything that you may need personally (antacid, benadryl for bee stings etc). Put these items in a zipper type plastic bag and just leave them in your golf bag.4. Rain suit- A rain suit is optional but can sure make your golfing experience more pleasant if you get caught in heavy rain. If not a rain suit, then an umbrella at least.5. Rangefinder/GPS- No explanation needed here.6. Glove- If you get caught in the rain or its hot and humid, having a couple spare gloves to use is much more pleasant than wearing a soggy golf glove all day. You can fasten the velcro on the back of the glove around a handle or loop on your golf bag to dry.7. Collapsible cup- These can be found in the camping section of most department stores and they sure will come in handy. You can use it to drink from and many have a small storage box built into the lid. Stick one in your bag and you can thank me later.8. Snacks- Suit yourself, but I prefer things like granola bars or hardy fruit like an apple. DON’T FORGET to take uneaten snacks and any wrappers from your bag. You will have a bag full of ants and other critters or rotten fruit if you forget.9. Permanent marker- There is no point in getting into an argument with your golfing buddies. It only takes a second to put an identifiable mark on your ball. I carry two or three colors.10. Extra shoelaces- This is an item that is often overlooked, but think about it. If you break a lace on your golf shoes it’s gonna be a long day of discomfort, heel slippage and blistered feet. In the long run a pair of shoe laces could save a lot of extra strokes.11. Eyeglass repair kit- You never know when you will be glad to have this but when the time comes, you will. Even if you don’t wear prescription glasses, sunglasses break too. Most kits include a screwdriver, extra screws and a magnifying glass. If you wear contact lenses, put some in your bag in case you lose one.12. Tissues- Tissues or toilet paper are items you will find many uses for. Either put some in a plastic bag or get the small tissue packs (my wife carries these in her purse) that are sold at your local drug store.13. Coolie cup- If you live in a hot region like I do, these are invaluable. I prefer the thinner neoprene style because they fit in the cup holder in a cart or pull cart better.14. Business cards- You meet a lot of people on the golf course and you may find a new lead or prospective partner. Maybe you will need to write a phone number on the back for your own use.15. Multi-tool- If you carry one in your bag, you or your golfing buddies will find many uses for it. There are many different types that have a variety of tools on them. Find what works best for you.16. Cell phone- Hold on! I agree that cell phones can be very annoying at the links but they do have valuable uses too. If a phone is turned off or set to vibrate only they are no bother to players. There may be times when you really need one though. What if someone in your group has a heart attack or other life threatening problem? What if there is a question of the rules during a tournament? What if there is a family emergency? These and other reasons are why I am not opposed to cell phones on the golf course, provided they are used with respect to other players.

You may already have several of these items in your bag and there may be important items that I have overlooked but hopefully there is a gold nugget or two here that you can use.

Improving Your Golf Game – What Causes a Flat Swing?

Improving Your Golf Game – What Causes a Flat Swing?

Article by Joe Gambino

Everyone wants to be good at golf. All people play it because it is a sport that can be played into retirement. The only issue with the game is that not very many people are good at it. Since most of us aren’t named Mickelson or Woods, we don’t have the genetics to be an instant professional. Fortunately after tweaking a few things you can improve your game tremendously. New players, maybe you, sometimes have a “flat” swing. A “flat” swing is simply a byproduct of another issue in your swing. This causes you to come “over-the-top” bringing scores up and morale down. Fortunately for you, I have identified the most common issues in golfers that I have met over the years which may identify with yourself. The four most prevalent problems are:

1. Club too flat

If you bring the club to far inside you can get stuck on the downswing. This will re-route you to the outside because it causes your elbow to come up.

2. Reverse Pivot

A reverse pivot happens when you leave the majority of weight on the forward leg at the top of the backswing. This is causes by the lower body sliding away from the target on the backswing which forces the upper body to fall toward the target.

3. Narrow Swing Arc

Usually this happens because you may fold your arm too early and keep the club too close to your body. This will cause you to feel the need to throw the club over the top of the body in order to free it.

4. Open Club Face Over the Top

When the face of the club is open at the top it forces the player to swing left (on a righty) to get the face square before hitting the ball. The reason that the club face is open is usually because of a weak grip.

Here is the guide that I have found to give your swing the most power, accuracy, and consistency: Golf Swing Guru . It has worked for me and many of my colleagues and can also work for you whether you are a novice or a regular. Check it out now!

The Quickest & Easiest Way To Improve Your Golf Game

The Quickest & Easiest Way To Improve Your Golf Game

Article by Angie Poole

If I had to pick just one way to score better I’d say, “improve your putting.” Because it’s a simple formula. If you shot a 100 in your last game of golf and you had 8, 3 putts in that score then it doesn’t take a genius to work out that if you could turn those 3 putts into 2 putts then you’d score 8 shots better.

Ok, we’ve worked out that you need to practice your putting, but how?

Well it’s been proven that the better the putter is the better they are at long putts, so that’s where you should spend most of your time practicing. And don’t just practice your putting line but rather practice hitting putts a correct weight. Because it doesn’t matter if your ball is on the correct line if it’s 10 feet short or long. And think about how often your putts are 10 feet wide of the hole. It’s not often is it?

So practice long putts and one of the best drills to improve your putting touch is to putt balls to the edge of the putting green. Get about 5 balls and start about 30 feet away from the fringe and try to putt the balls so they end up as close to the fringe as possible.

During this exercise don’t worry about direction, only speed. Keep doing this and vary the distance from the fringe for each 5 balls you stroke. Do this at least 6 times so you practice at least 30 putts.

Also, to make this exercise more effective, putt with your eyes closed. And after you’ve hit each putt guess how close the ball has come to your target (i.e. the fringe). Once your ball has stopped rolling, open your eyes and see how correct you were.

Now here’s another great distance control putting drill.

On your practice putting green measure 30 feet from the fringe. Then place about 15 balls down there. Then putt your first ball and try to get it at as close to the fringe as possible. Once you’ve done this then hit your second putt and try to get it to finish as close to your first ball as possible without going past it. Then hit your third putt and try to get it to finish as close to your second ball as possible, without going past it.

Keep doing this and see how many balls you can get between yourself and the fringe. But if any balls go past the previous ball then it’s game over. You have to start again.

This is a fun putting game to see how many balls you can get between the fringe and yourself and it will improve your distance control at the same time. Plus you can keep record of your personal best and try and beat it.

Doing putting drills like this allows you to concentrate solely on feel and weight without worrying about whether the ball has gone in the hole. And if you improve your long putting your scores will improve and it will be easier than working on your swing.

You see, there’s no point in hitting the ball great but then 3 putting. So improve your putting first and then work on improving your swing.

How To Improve Your Golf Game At Home

How To Improve Your Golf Game At Home

Article by Matthew Roberts

While not many of us want to admit it, we all know that no matter how money we spend or how many articles we read, the only way to truly get better at golf is to practice.

But you and I also know that it’s easier said than done.

Not everybody has access to a driving range, and not everybody can get out to the course all the time to practice.

So here are a few simple and fun exercises you can do at home that will help improve your game.

Putt Indoors

The less you think about your putting the better it will be… but to really make this ring true you need to have a “feel” for your putter.

So grab your putter and a few balls and head indoors. Mark one ball as the “jack” and play a little lawn bowls sort of game with your putter. Try and play on all different surfaces from carpet to tiles to floorboards etc. Sure you won’t learn how to read lines, and floorboards are going to be faster than any green in the world, but the key here is to develop feel.

Putting towards a target on these different surfaces will firstly help you with your alignment and accuracy… but more importantly it will help you to understand how your putter behaves. This is one of the most necessary parts of putting, and is why most people recommend you never change putters.

3-Foot Chipping

Even if you only have a couple of feet of grass in your backyard you can still practice your chips.

One of the hardest chips to get consistently right is that really short shot that requires you to only chip a few feet onto the green. More often than not with these chips, people will get too loose in their stroke and hit the ball fat.

So get out there and practice short chips in your backyard. If you can get solid contact and build a good technique with these very delicate shots, you will have a much easier time out on the course… especially when it comes to more aggressive chips.

Hit Bottle Caps

My grandpa taught me this drill, and it is one of the best around for building the consistency of your ball striking.

What you do is get a bottle cap (the smaller the better) and place it on the cement. Then grab an old iron and practice hitting the bottle cap straight from the cement.

You’ll need an almost perfect swing to be able to actually hit the bottle cap without smacking the club on the cement. Start with very small swings and eventually work your way up to a full swing. Then grab and old driver and do the same.

Backyard Golf Course

Here’s a great little game I’ve heard some people try for fun. While it won’t directly help your game out on the course, it will help improve your control over your short shots and also act as an alternative to the real thing if you find yourself stuck at home.

What you do is grab a few wiffle balls, a few small bowls and a pitching wedge. Then set up the bowls around your house (inside or outside) and make your own little course. Then with the wiffle balls, play your course trying to chip the ball into the bowls in the least number of strokes.

Yes, it’s a bit eccentric but still good fun… expecially when you get creative with you courses. One of the most unique “holes” I have heard of is having the bowl placed on the edge of the top of the toilet, with a “water hazard” below.

Choose The Right Golf Ball To Improve Your Golf Game

Choose The Right Golf Ball To Improve Your Golf Game

Article by Tim Lee

The earliest golf balls have been traced to late 18th century and were made of wood in Scotland. They were very susceptible to the elements and ended up with cracks. Early 19th century saw the advent of the feathery ball, made of leather and stuffed tight with feathers. This ball became very popular until the “guttie” made its entry, made of solid gutta-percha rubber.

It was more durable and had stronger resistance to the elements. A lot of science has gone into designing a modern golf ball since and today’s golf balls are a scientific combination of chemicals and polymers making it accurately fly farther.

Golf Balls today are of three kinds – two-piece, three-piece and high performance. The two-piece ball is made of a solid core and cover and offers better distance with slow swing, while the three-piece ball is made of solid core, wound with elastic and then covered, offering more control. High performance balls are for accuracy.

The two-piece balls are designed for beginners and the other varieties are fro advanced golfers. The cover is generally made of Surlyn or Balata. Surlyn is more durable and strong whereas Balata is softer and provides better grip and control with spin. Balata is preferred by most golfers. Two-piece balls are cheaper and highly available. Three-piece and high performance balls are very expensive and designed for professionals and advanced players.

Choosing a golf ball could be tricky, if you choose the ball used by Tiger Woods, it is not necessary that you can have the same handicap that he does. The choice has to be made as per you game style. The wrong ball could give you bigger handicaps and the right ball could make you feel like a champion.

Choosing a golf ball will depend upon your swing and style of play. If you are still confused, you can try each of the varieties for some days at a time and compare the results.

Similar to choosing your golf clubs, choose the golf ball that suits your swing and game so as to eliminate weaknesses and build upon your strengths. Never go by brands, brands are secondary to performance and suitability. Make sure you like a golf ball because it betters your play, not because it was made by Nike or Yonex.

Finally, do not fall for personalized and logo golf balls, they are just temptations.

Improve Your Golf Game With a Custom Fit

Improve Your Golf Game With a Custom Fit

Article by Mike Blair

You will play better golf when every club in your set is properly fit for you. If you’re in the market for a new set of clubs, or just one special club, you owe it to yourself to get custom fitted. It doesn’t take long or cost much extra, if anything.

You’ll hit all shots more accurately. You’ll consistently drive the ball longer. You’ll have more consistent distance control. You’ll execute your short game with more precision. You’ll lower your score.

Every golfer is a little different, from the shape of their body to the shape of their swing. A custom fitting will result in clubs that are specifically built for your height, strength, swing-speed and swing characteristics.

Some golfers think they need to improve to a certain level before they get fitted. Actually, it’s just the opposite. The more of a novice you are, the more you will benefit from custom fitting. A novice using an ill-fitted club will compensate and groove a swing adjustment that will later limit his ability to improve. It’s best to groove solid fundamentals, knowing that when a ball is miss-hit, it’s the fault of your swing, not the club.

Off-the-shelf golf clubs are one-size-fits-all, designed for the average player, someone 5-foo-9 or 5-foot-10 who hits a 6-iron 160 yards. Even if you are of average height, your stance and swing characteristics might require a different club lie-angle. Even a player with a sound setup and swing will experience unwanted draws or fades if the lie-angle of his clubs is incorrect. He will lose distance, usually half a club length, even on a well struck shot.

Teaching pros estimate that 90 percent of golfers would benefit from custom built clubs.

There are several ways to go about getting custom fitted. The easiest is static measuring, which involves your physical measurements. You measure your height with shoes on. Then measure the distance from your wrist to the ground, again with your shoes on. There are custom fitting guide charts available online that will take these measurements and indicate what your corresponding shaft length adjustment should be. Your gender, age and strength can be used to estimate the proper shaft material, steel or graphite. An honest appraisal of your swing speed (slow and easy, normal, fast, or extreme) will indicate the appropriate flex for your shaft.

The next step up is dynamic measuring, actually hitting balls using the same club configured in various lengths, lies, and flexes A club-fitting pro will have a cart filled with, say Titleist 6 irons, each configured slightly differently, from half-inch differences in length to single degree differences in lie, from flat to normal to upright. Impact tape is applied to the clubs you’ll hit. Based on ball flight, impact marks on the club and your own feedback as to which configuration feels best, the pro will make adjustments, and you’ll find the right specs for you.

A more high-tech fitting process involves computers and electronic body sensors, which some manufacturers use for their sponsored pros, and which they are beginning to roll out to fitting centers nationwide. But this approach may be more than you need, and is costly and time consuming as well.

Armed with your specifications, you can buy from the pro that fitted you, or order from any supplier you prefer. Most shops will throw in the cost of a fitting if you buy from them. Otherwise the cost is about . Custom made clubs should cost no more than off-the-shelf standard clubs, barring any shaft or grip upgrade.

You can even order custom fitted knock-offs and save money and strokes at the same time. Knock-offs are similar in appearance to other brands made within legal limits.

Most players think of iron sets when they think of custom fit golf clubs. But you’ll play better when your putter, wedges and woods are custom fit, too.

Custom fitted golf clubs will enhance your enjoyment of the game, whether you’re a scratch golfer or a weekend warrior just looking for a few hours of fun with friends.

How A Muffin Tin Can Improve Your Golf Game

How A Muffin Tin Can Improve Your Golf Game

Article by Gray Rollins

Any golfer will tell you that a lot of confusion can stem from not being able to identify your ball on the course. When two balls fall near to the hole but also near to each other, the debate over which player made which shot can get quite uncomfortable. This kind of awkward situation can take a lot of the fun out of this otherwise soothing sport, and can negatively affect your ability to play well.

During an argument, your muscles naturally tense in order to prepare you for the possibility of a physical attack. This response is meant to protect you in a high stakes life or death situation. But in a low stakes situation like a game of golf your body’s natural defense mode can sabotage your game by keeping you all wound up, when what you really need on the course is to stay calm. Golfing experts agree that one of the keys to a perfect shot is relaxing your muscles so you can achieve your maximum range of mobility and greatest efficiency of movement. To keep play moving swiftly without being halted by snafus, to keep your cool and avoid heated arguments, and to keep yourself relaxed in order to achieve your best game, it is a good idea to make your golf balls unique.

By making your golf balls stand out from the ones owned by other players on the course, you can take a big step towards being a better and happier golfer because you will be minimizing one of those hassles of the game.

Some people purchase monogrammed balls, which is a smart way to make sure your golf balls can’t be mistaken for anybody else’s on the course. Other people buy golf balls as souvenirs on their trips to unique places, and doing this all but guarantees that your ball will stand out. However, both of these options can be quite costly. And, every golfer knows that balls get lost easily and often, which makes expensive golf balls quite a luxury. Most amateur golfers balk at spending a lot of money on golf balls that will inevitably disappear into water traps or get lost in the rough at the edge of the course.

For an inexpensive and simple alternative to buying pricey monogrammed or souvenir golf ball, you can mark your balls at home. First, get a small muffin tin and place one golf ball in each of the indentations. This will keep the balls from rolling into each other while they are drying. Then, take a permanent marker and mark the top of each ball. You can write your initials; or use a simple symbol like a star, a square, or even a large dot. Leave the tin and the balls in place for a few hours so the ink can set, and then get ready to hit the course. The next time that you need to know if a ball is yours, all that you will have to do is look at it and then move on with no hassle, and without any of the tension that can sabotage your game.
